Holding the safety line firmly, ensuring absolute security
This Winter Olympics emphasizes the principles of "simplicity, safety, and excellence." Amidst the pandemic, it is especially important to prevent and address all risks comprehensively. Safety is the foundation of a successful Olympics, and ensuring the safety of the Winter Games is crucial for the smooth conduct of the event. To successfully host the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, China has developed a meticulous and comprehensive security plan during the preparation process, with a significant focus on leveraging technology to support the national security system.
To address the strategic technological needs for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the Ministry of Science and Technology, along with other relevant departments, developed the "Science and Technology Winter Olympics (2022) Action Plan" in 2016. This plan included implementing the national key R&D program focused on "Science and Technology Winter Olympics" and deployed research tasks across five major areas: scientific event organization, sports technology, intelligent viewing, safety assurance, and green intelligent comprehensive demonstration.
The goal was to enhance key technologies, strengthen applications in various scenarios of event organization, participation, and viewing, and establish a series of comprehensive application demonstration projects, providing strong support for the successful hosting of the Winter Olympics.
Tsinghua Tech Ensures Safe Winter Olympics
Focusing on the technical needs of "public safety assurance" for the Winter Olympics, the Department of Engineering Physics at Tsinghua University led a national key research project, "Tech Winter Olympics." In collaboration with Beijing Novel Medical Equipment Co., Ltd., and the China Customs Science and Technology Research Center, they jointly developed several fast intelligent regulatory devices for nuclear radiation risk factors.
This project addresses the challenges of large crowds, diverse materials, and fast-changing, densely distributed potential nuclear risk factors and other contraband during the Winter Olympics. It develops rapid intelligent monitoring technologies and equipment to tackle these issues. Key research includes developing a holographic positioning system for wide-area tracking of nuclear factors and creating handheld nuclear radiation imaging devices for targeted mobile enforcement, forming a dynamic, precise, intelligent regulatory inspection model, with demonstrations in key areas.
The system has been deployed in the closed-loop at Beijing Capital Airport for the Winter Olympics, taking on the crucial role of "nuclear security" for inbound travelers, providing strong technological support for the intelligent regulation of nuclear risks during the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, ensuring their smooth execution.
Established in June 2011, Novel Medical Equipment Co., Ltd., a high-tech company in collaboration with Tsinghua University, focuses on nuclear security and medical imaging.
